Solas Eige Project Support Consultant
- Contract Duration: 4 months
- Total contract value: £ 4,750
- Day rate: £250
- 15 days and up to £1000 travel expenses
- Reports to Solas Eige board
Background
- Through Solas Eige SCIO, the community on Eigg wishes to purchase and repair St Columba’s church, a C-listed building, with the aim of making it fit for purpose as a centre where visitors will discover the multi-layered story of Eigg and enjoy a variety of cultural activities.
- St Columba’s fabric repair is a challenging project which will involve making the building watertight and sustainable in its usage for years to come as a carbon neutral venue. Solas Eige SCIO has teamed up with Conservation architect BARD to provide a blue print for extensive fabric repairs, including insulation and re-slating of roof.
- Following acquisition of the church building, the first task will be to secure access to water and foul water treatment as well as vehicular access and disabled parking within a tight time frame to conclude the preparatory phase by end of March 2026 before the repair phase can start. The second task will be to assist with the repair phase.
The role
The Project support consultant will bring capacity to the project by providing operational support to the board in the preparatory phase and bring it to a successful conclusion.
There will also be a preparatory element for the repair phase as indicated below.
Tasks:
- Liaise with BARD Conservation Architect, Solas Eige Board and planning services to implement vehicular access, provision of water and of septic tank/foul water treatment provision as agreed with Solas Eige SCIO board.
- Liaise with Planning services and BARD architects to finalise and submit planning and listed building consents for the repair phase.
- Liaise with and manage local contractors including site management and health and safety issues.
- Support Solas Eige Board with regular progress updates and reports to satisfy funders’ requirements
- Draw up the health and safety profile/spec/strategy for the next phase of the work
- Assist with writing contractors’briefs for repair phase of work
- Assist with technical information to be printed on all-weather banners and community briefings
Conditions
- The consultant will be highly adaptable, able to work independently and on their own initiative, as well as working as part of a small team.
- Ability to work flexible hours and perform well under pressure will be required to meet the demands of the project.

Qualities and experience required
- The successful candidate will need to demonstrate
- working knowledge of project management and planning services
- understanding of island conditions.
- excellent communication skills
- good time management and ability to deliver on schedule
Travel
- Travel and subsistence will be paid against claims for relevant expenditure.
Accommodation
- Accommodation for consultant’s visits to the island will be provided by Solas Eige.
